Sneaker Nicknames Explained: “Black Cat,” “Pure Money,” “Cervidae” and More

20 May, 2013 · by urbanblog · in Sneakers

Sneaker nicknames can derive from a variety of inspirations. Some sneaker companies and collaborators opt for local flavor, while others reach into other cultures for the first step in the creative process. We uncover the usage of both techniques in the latest installment of Sneaker Nicknames Explained. Let us know which sneaker nicknames you would like to see us explain further in the comment section.

Air Jordan 4 “Black Cat”

Air Jordan 4 Black Cat
Outside of occasionally going by a derivative of “Air” (i.e “His Airness”), Michael Jordan never had a well-known nickname. MJ or Jordan sufficed both during his career and afterwards. However, a little known fact is that friends began to call MJ “Black Cat” around 1996. Though the Air Jordan 13 was designed with a Black Panther in mind, it was the blacked-out Air Jordan 4 “Black Cat” that released in 1996 that was inspired by the little known nickname.

Nike Zoom Kobe VI “Draft Day”

Nike Zoom Kobe VI "Draft Day"
Kobe Bryant will go down as one of the best basketball players of all time. However, he almost took his talents to a much smaller market than the lights and glamour of Los Angeles. It’s hard to imagine Kobe in anything but a Laker uniform, but he was actually drafted 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets. That fact is the inspiration behind the nickname and colorway of the Nike Zoom Kobe VI “Draft Day.”

6 May, 2013 · by urbanblog · in Sneakers

In these times, quick, relatable nicknames are easier to identify with, allowing a sneaker’s story to be told in a shortened way  for a culture used to quickly receiving information. Nice Kicks continues to shed light on some of the most popular nicknames that have helped keep certain sneakers at the top of our collective minds. The stories behind a name usually have more depth than you may initially think, and we delve into those backstories in this week’s installment of Sneaker Nicknames Explained. Be sure to let us know which sneaker nicknames you would like to know the story behind next week.

Nike Air Penny V “Red Eagle”

Sneaker Nicknames Explained:
Anfernee Hardaway’s fifth signature may have come after his playing days were over, but most of the colorways are inspired by his time on the court. With obvious “Orlando,” “Suns,” and “Memphis” releases, many wondered where the brightly colored “Red Eagle” makeup stemmed from. This nickname was in homage to Penny’s high school team, the Treadwell Eagles, in Memphis, Tennessee, who sport a red/white-black school color scheme.

Sneaker Nicknames Explained: Premio “Bin 23″ Collection, “Tiffany,” “Workforce” and More

15 April, 2013 · by urbanblog · in Sneakers

Nice Kicks continues to delve into the story behind the talked about trend of sneaker nicknames. Some nickname origins are obvious, but others may not be as clear as you think. Furthermore, other sneakers, and sneaker packs, are given nicknames that have a personal connection. We explore a few of those nicknames in the second installment of Sneaker Nicknames Explained.

RELATED: Sneaker Nicknames Explained: “Bugs Bunny”, “Born Not Made”, “Lobster Harvest”, and more.

Air Jordan Premio “Bin 23″ Collection

The Air Jordan Premio “Bin 23″ Collection is the object of desire for many sneaker enthusiasts, especially Jordan fans. The collection was intended to put a sophisticated twist on Air Jordan models, as “Bin” refers to a term in wine culture that signifies premium contents being used. Therefore, the name is appropriate for the Air Jordan collection, in which the limited sneakers are composed of premium materials. There is also a red splatter on each “Bin 23″ Jordan as symbol of authenticity similar to that the wax seal used as an authenticity marker on some wine bottles. The Air Jordan 2 Premio “Bin 23″ was the first to drop in the collection in 2010. Which has been your favorite?
