Deriving from a drive-by shooting in 2013 that caused Rick Ross to crash his Rolls Royce in Miami, the Maybach rapper delivers the cinematic visuals to “Nobody.” Paying homage to Biggie Smalls’ “You’re Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You),” the track nods to Biggie’s own strife with rival gang members and features French Montana and vocal recordings from Diddy. The video starts with a 911 call before the search for the assassin begins, while Rozay raps on a pensive tip throughout. The release is reminiscent of Biggie and Puff Daddy’s close relationship, further making parallels to Rick Ross. “Nodody” is featured on Mastermind, which is due for release on March 3 via Def Jam Recordings.

Musicians like The Weeknd and Frank Ocean get all the buzz for bringing R&B into the 21st century, but Jesse Boykins III, a 29-year-old Chicago musician who made his come up working with one of Brooklyn’s most progressive rappers (Melo-X,) needs to get more of that credit. He’s spent years reconciling the grove that makes Motown killer, with the subtle poetic craft of post-R.Kelly R&B.
If none of that highbrow music shit makes any sense to you though, just play Mr. Boykins III’s music and watch everyone in the room start having sex with each other.
Watch the upbeat lyric video for his track “Plain” above. His new album, LoveApparatus, arrives April 22nd. For more from Jesse Boykins III in the meantime, follow his SoundCloud.
